"Coach" Is No Small Word

With the launch of Evoke 2014, we're shifting gears today to honor business coaches - those in our network and others from around the world. As an EMyth follower, you understand the value of coaching and mentoring, but sometimes it can be hard to describe what these incredible people really do, who they 'are' in the life of a business owner. If you're a coach or advisor or looking to become one, I hope you'll join me Thursday for this free video recording on growing your practice. For now, let's start with a few ideas about the 'stuff' that great coaches are made of:

... they understand business, but they're more interested in helping you grow than giving you quick fixes.

... they understand people, and they know that underneath every challenge is a human being longing to live a life that's more meaningful today than it was yesterday.

... they know their stuff, but they're more interested in putting ideas into practice than being right.

... they don't cheerlead, because they know real inspiration comes from finding what's real and growing from there.

... they don't use words like 'success' because their goal is to help you get to what's meaningful for you beyond money.

... they understand business, but they're more interested in helping you grow than giving you quick fixes.

... they don't strive for perfection, because they know that the best things about us are not what we achieve, but who we can become.

... they don't claim to be an expert about your life, but they don't shy away from telling you when you're not living it!

In the end, the best business coaches - the best 'helpers' in all fields - are the people who've learned how to help themselves. They're people who are interested in what's 'real', who accept their limits but keep testing them anyway, and who know that it's who they are inside that draws other people to the real work of leadership, and of life.
